Evolving in Burlington, NC
Anyone who chooses to live at an Evolve Companies property knows style is a must and resort-style amenities are always a plush perk. As we evolved into Burlington, NC, we chose to work with Ci Design, Inc. on one of our latest multi-family apartment projects slated to begin leasing in the later-half of 2028.
Beginning this Spring, we entered the design phase of this recently named Burlington apartment community – Hawthorne at Alamance Crossing. While we work with Ci Design, we decided to take you on the artistic journey following the inspiration behind the design elements and full scope of ascetics selected for this new construction project through a Q&A with our lead designer, Gisela.
Meet Gisela De Vittorio

Evolve asked: How did you first get into design?
Gisela at Ci Design, Inc. answered: I did not find design as part of a single moment; it has always been a part of how I see the world. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I was constantly drawn toward subjects in art and history. I spent a great deal of my childhood immersed in the historic center of our capital city, San Juan. Embedded in drawing, painting and pottery lessons, I was able to develop a unique perspective on space, form and artistic expression. The artistic influence from several members of my family, in addition to my growing appreciation for history, culture and the relationship between them, encouraged me to pursue architecture as a creative field.
Working at an interior design firm early on in my career shifted how I approach design. It was an enriching opportunity that gave me a deeper appreciation for the built environment and the intricacies that affect how we experience a space from the inside out. That transition refined my skills and broadened my understanding of how architecture and interiors work and meld together.
When I travel, I am constantly taking photographs as I am fascinated by how design visually evolves. I strive to create designs that feel timeless and rooted in context rather than tied to a specific moment. With that, I also enjoy bringing a sense of personality and unexpected detail into projects. Those touches of whimsy can transform a project from generic to a unique and memorable experience.
Evolve: Moving on to our Burlington property, what’s your process when you first begin a project?
Ci Design: We begin every project by studying the surrounding context and local market, looking at competitors to understand what is already there. The goal is to create something that respects the local character but at the same time is distinctive and one-of-a-kind.
From this research, we develop the design in close collaboration with our client, in this case Evolve Companies, refining ideas and incorporating new elements as the project takes shape. Every project establishes its own identity—we are constantly searching for ways to introduce unique elements, tailored to the space for residents and guests alike.
Evolve: What was the inspiration for the clubhouse?
Ci Design: Evolve Burlington’s (Hawthorne at Alamance Crossing) clubhouse was inspired by the surrounding natural landscape, with a neutral palette and subtle nods to nature throughout. We focused on creating a bright, welcoming space—leaning away from darker tones in favor of something fresh, timeless, and not overly trend-driven.
Texture and pattern add depth to the design, while artistic moments like the three-dimensional metallic artwork around the Great Room fireplace bring in a unique focal point without losing the overall warmth and comfort of the space.
Evolve: Tell us about the colors you went with.
Ci Design: The palette is primarily high-contrast black and white, creating a clean, bright foundation. Instead of relying on bold colors, we brought in interest through texture, wood tones, and subtle accents.
Natural materials play a big role in the aesthetic, adding warmth while tying back to the surrounding context. You can also notice hints of soft greens—particularly in areas like the restrooms—to reinforce that connection to nature without overpowering the space.

Evolve: How about selecting art? How do you choose the right pieces?
Ci Design: We approach art with a broad audience in mind—pieces should feel engaging and appropriate. We tend to lean toward more neutral, abstract selections that complement the overall aesthetic rather than compete with it.
Color and composition are key, but it also comes down to instinct. The piece must visually fit the space and feel right within it—something that adds interest without overwhelming the design.
Evolve: What are your favorite elements of the design in this project?
Ci Design: One of my favorite features is the Great Room fireplace. We are treating it as both an architectural element and a piece of art, using a large-scale woven metal mesh that spans the wall. It creates an impressive and engaging focal point within a dual-height space while also bringing the scale to a human level.
Throughout the project, we focused on adding texture and visual interest in thoughtful ways, like patterned tile in the mailroom or layered materials that feel dimensional without being overwhelming. At the same time, we have created smaller, more intimate moments within the larger spaces — lounge seating, library-style nooks, and banquettes near the coffee bar.
Each area has its own identity, but they are all connected through a cohesive design approach. That balance between variety and consistency is what really makes the project feel complete.

Evolve: Bringing everything back home, what colors did you choose for the model apartment and why?
Ci Design: For the model apartment, we kept the palette neutral to act as a blank canvas, giving residents the flexibility to bring in their own personality. We paired wood-look or stone-inspired LVT flooring with two options for cabinetry: a clean white or a warm, khaki-beige tone to add softness without relying on traditional wood finishes.
Texture plays a big role as well, especially in areas like the backsplash, where we’re exploring subtle variations on a classic subway tile to add depth and interest. The bathrooms follow a similar approach, with neutral tones and black fixtures for a clean, cohesive look.
Overall, the palette ties back to the amenity spaces, creating a seamless extension of the overall design, while still allowing for slight variations between units.

DIY Apartment Interior Design Tips From The Professionals
Evolve: Are there any tips or tricks to maximizing space in an apartment?
Ci Design: It really comes down to being resourceful. Thoughtful furniture selection and layout are key—look for pieces that can serve multiple purposes, like storage ottomans or convertible tables.
You can also layer in personality through smaller design touches, so the space feels full and intentional without relying on larger, space-consuming elements.
Evolve: Do you have any tips for residents who are just moving in + need a little help visualizing their space?
Ci Design: Start with a mood board—it’s a great way to bring your ideas together and see how everything will work as a whole. Whether it’s on Pinterest, Canva, or even printed cutouts, having a visual plan makes a big difference.
It also helps to measure your space and plan ahead before purchasing anything. Think through your layout, key pieces like the sofa and rug, and how everything will function together. When you take the time upfront, it is much easier to maximize your space and make every surface feel intentional and usable.

Stay Salty
Evolve Companies always likes to stay a step (or a few steps!) above that standard. So when designing our pools, we always elect to build saltwater pools rather than chlorine.
Why are saltwater pools better than traditional chlorine? Saltwater pools tend to be milder on the skin. Saltwater is actually the pure form of chlorine meaning it still keeps the water just as clean but the system uses electrolysis to convert the salt into pure chlorine without the skin-irritating byproduct ingredients found in pool chlorine. That means no red eyes, dry skin or stripped hair due to chemicals – just soft, silky saltwater.

Evolve Waterford’s one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment homes feature open-concept floorplans with high ceilings throughout, tile backsplashes and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, as well as spacious closets and high-quality fixtures.
Within the community itself, residents can enjoy a resort-style saltwater swimming pool, pickleball court, complimentary coffee bar, dog park, and playground. While Phase I of Evolve Waterford is complete, Phase II construction will begin in May 2026 and aim for first move-ins in the summer of 2027. Phase II will also offer new unit types as well as an elevator-serviced building.

One of the newest projects we have up our sleeves at Evolve is located in Burlington, the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont region. Evolve Crossings will offer spacious one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment homes with high-end finishes throughout.
Evolve Crossings will feature a resort-style saltwater swimming pool, beautifully designed clubhouse, and a golf simulator! The community is located within close proximity to Elon University as well as the Alamance Crossing shopping center.
Construction is scheduled to begin by the third quarter of 2026 with an estimated completion date sometime within the second quarter of 2028. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for updates on Evolve Crossings!

Do you allow pets?
Yes! All Evolve Apartment Communities allow pets. They’re purr-fectly fine by us. In fact, we love your pets as much as you do and that’s why we offer a fenced park and dog spa. Like all apartments, we do have a few exceptions so please ask about your specific furry friends when you’re on your leasing tour.
How far away are Oak Island Beaches?
Pack your beach bags and set your clock for island time! While most GPS devices will tell you it takes about 20 minutes to drive from Southport to Oak Island, we clock less than 10 minutes from our parking lot to the beachfront. Oak Island is a long strand of beach comprised of three different towns: Holden Beach, Long Beach and Caswell Beach. Take your pick!

Just 30 minutes outside of Nashville and 10 minutes from Mt Juliet, the garden-style community of Hawthorne at South Hartmann will start framing in spring 2026.
Construction at Evolve Soundside in Surf City, NC has begun, and framing will start in summer 2026. Located less than 30 minutes from both Wilmington and Camp Lejeune, this garden-style community will be the perfect place to grow.
The Bennett in Northlake is also underway with an estimated completion for November 2026. This community is a 4-story project in the Northlake mall area and will feature modern architecture and elevator access.

Beyond the incredible amenities, our communities are designed with intention. At Evolve Waterford in Belville, NC, we’ve truly leveled up with Level 5 Designs. We had the pleasure of interviewing several of the designers who helped transform Evolve Waterford, and we’re so excited to share all about the design process and unique elements that help make the community so special!
Diving Into the Design
Our Evolve team asked: How would you describe the design process at Level 5 Designs?
The team at Level 5 answered: Incredibly collaborative! We aim to bring in all the ideas we can at the beginning of a job especially to see how we can make each project distinct and intentional.
Evolve: How would you describe the design elements that define Evolve Waterford and luxury living here in Belville, NC?
Level 5: Bold and notable. We wanted Evolve at Waterford to stand apart in the best way possible in Belville, while still ensuring there was a relatable aspect where residents can be comfortable and make the most use of the spaces. Much of the photography is specific to Belville which made the selections all that more intentional and special!

Evolve: What was your favorite/most memorable space to design when it came to Evolve Waterford?
Level 5: We have so many! The turquoise rock art in shadow boxes in the Leasing area was a fun way to bring in texture and color in a creative and unexpected way. Designing the main Clubroom was also a collaborative effort from our team, our goal was to ensure each zone felt inviting, intimate, and well-defined, while still maintaining a cohesive flow from end to end with impactful moments in each direction someone would turn.
Evolve: What is one go-to/easy way to elevate the interior design of any room? How did you implement this at Waterford?
Level 5: Layers! This is an aspect we utilize in all of our jobs, bringing in lots of layers of texture and curated items instantly makes a space feel more designed and elevated. We aim to create this sophisticated design aspect but with a lived in approach so those who get to experience the space feel comfortable. Specifically at Waterford, we extended the materials all the way to the ceiling which is a highly effective design technique for elevating a space both visually and experientially – Our black fireplace tile, faux concrete columns, and full height backsplashes aimed to hone in on this design aspect.
Evolve: What are three words that come to mind when thinking of the design elements of Evolve Waterford?

Still to come this year, is Evolve at Mebane Oaks. Vertical construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026. The property is slated for completion at the end of 2027.

How we’re evolving in 2025
Spring has officially arrived, and here at Evolve we’re all about development in 2025—helping you evolve the way you live. Our goal is to guarantee a superior housing experience so that your home always feels like your own private oasis. We have some incredible projects up our sleeves at Evolve Companies this year that we can’t wait to share with you. Keep reading to hear all about our evolution in 2025!
Evolve at the Pines
Greenville, NC
Located near East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, Evolve at the Pines offers easy access to the best shopping, dining, and entertainment in the area. With one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment homes, and resort-style amenities, Evolve at the Pines offers something for everyone.
Residents can lounge in a beautiful community clubhouse, exercise in a state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center, spend time with friends in the game room, and take their fur-babies to the dog park and pet spa.
The first buildings will be available for move-ins this spring, with the entire community being completed by the end of 2025!
