Evolving in Burlington, NC
Anyone who chooses to live at an Evolve Companies property knows style is a must and resort-style amenities are always a plush perk. As we evolved into Burlington, NC, we chose to work with Ci Design, Inc. on one of our latest multi-family apartment projects slated to begin leasing in the later-half of 2028.
Beginning this Spring, we entered the design phase of this recently named Burlington apartment community – Hawthorne at Alamance Crossing. While we work with Ci Design, we decided to take you on the artistic journey following the inspiration behind the design elements and full scope of ascetics selected for this new construction project through a Q&A with our lead designer, Gisela.
Meet Gisela De Vittorio

Evolve asked: How did you first get into design?
Gisela at Ci Design, Inc. answered: I did not find design as part of a single moment; it has always been a part of how I see the world. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I was constantly drawn toward subjects in art and history. I spent a great deal of my childhood immersed in the historic center of our capital city, San Juan. Embedded in drawing, painting and pottery lessons, I was able to develop a unique perspective on space, form and artistic expression. The artistic influence from several members of my family, in addition to my growing appreciation for history, culture and the relationship between them, encouraged me to pursue architecture as a creative field.
Working at an interior design firm early on in my career shifted how I approach design. It was an enriching opportunity that gave me a deeper appreciation for the built environment and the intricacies that affect how we experience a space from the inside out. That transition refined my skills and broadened my understanding of how architecture and interiors work and meld together.
When I travel, I am constantly taking photographs as I am fascinated by how design visually evolves. I strive to create designs that feel timeless and rooted in context rather than tied to a specific moment. With that, I also enjoy bringing a sense of personality and unexpected detail into projects. Those touches of whimsy can transform a project from generic to a unique and memorable experience.
Evolve: Moving on to our Burlington property, what’s your process when you first begin a project?
Ci Design: We begin every project by studying the surrounding context and local market, looking at competitors to understand what is already there. The goal is to create something that respects the local character but at the same time is distinctive and one-of-a-kind.
From this research, we develop the design in close collaboration with our client, in this case Evolve Companies, refining ideas and incorporating new elements as the project takes shape. Every project establishes its own identity—we are constantly searching for ways to introduce unique elements, tailored to the space for residents and guests alike.
Evolve: What was the inspiration for the clubhouse?
Ci Design: Evolve Burlington’s (Hawthorne at Alamance Crossing) clubhouse was inspired by the surrounding natural landscape, with a neutral palette and subtle nods to nature throughout. We focused on creating a bright, welcoming space—leaning away from darker tones in favor of something fresh, timeless, and not overly trend-driven.
Texture and pattern add depth to the design, while artistic moments like the three-dimensional metallic artwork around the Great Room fireplace bring in a unique focal point without losing the overall warmth and comfort of the space.
Evolve: Tell us about the colors you went with.
Ci Design: The palette is primarily high-contrast black and white, creating a clean, bright foundation. Instead of relying on bold colors, we brought in interest through texture, wood tones, and subtle accents.
Natural materials play a big role in the aesthetic, adding warmth while tying back to the surrounding context. You can also notice hints of soft greens—particularly in areas like the restrooms—to reinforce that connection to nature without overpowering the space.

Evolve: How about selecting art? How do you choose the right pieces?
Ci Design: We approach art with a broad audience in mind—pieces should feel engaging and appropriate. We tend to lean toward more neutral, abstract selections that complement the overall aesthetic rather than compete with it.
Color and composition are key, but it also comes down to instinct. The piece must visually fit the space and feel right within it—something that adds interest without overwhelming the design.
Evolve: What are your favorite elements of the design in this project?
Ci Design: One of my favorite features is the Great Room fireplace. We are treating it as both an architectural element and a piece of art, using a large-scale woven metal mesh that spans the wall. It creates an impressive and engaging focal point within a dual-height space while also bringing the scale to a human level.
Throughout the project, we focused on adding texture and visual interest in thoughtful ways, like patterned tile in the mailroom or layered materials that feel dimensional without being overwhelming. At the same time, we have created smaller, more intimate moments within the larger spaces — lounge seating, library-style nooks, and banquettes near the coffee bar.
Each area has its own identity, but they are all connected through a cohesive design approach. That balance between variety and consistency is what really makes the project feel complete.

Evolve: Bringing everything back home, what colors did you choose for the model apartment and why?
Ci Design: For the model apartment, we kept the palette neutral to act as a blank canvas, giving residents the flexibility to bring in their own personality. We paired wood-look or stone-inspired LVT flooring with two options for cabinetry: a clean white or a warm, khaki-beige tone to add softness without relying on traditional wood finishes.
Texture plays a big role as well, especially in areas like the backsplash, where we’re exploring subtle variations on a classic subway tile to add depth and interest. The bathrooms follow a similar approach, with neutral tones and black fixtures for a clean, cohesive look.
Overall, the palette ties back to the amenity spaces, creating a seamless extension of the overall design, while still allowing for slight variations between units.

DIY Apartment Interior Design Tips From The Professionals
Evolve: Are there any tips or tricks to maximizing space in an apartment?
Ci Design: It really comes down to being resourceful. Thoughtful furniture selection and layout are key—look for pieces that can serve multiple purposes, like storage ottomans or convertible tables.
You can also layer in personality through smaller design touches, so the space feels full and intentional without relying on larger, space-consuming elements.
Evolve: Do you have any tips for residents who are just moving in + need a little help visualizing their space?
Ci Design: Start with a mood board—it’s a great way to bring your ideas together and see how everything will work as a whole. Whether it’s on Pinterest, Canva, or even printed cutouts, having a visual plan makes a big difference.
It also helps to measure your space and plan ahead before purchasing anything. Think through your layout, key pieces like the sofa and rug, and how everything will function together. When you take the time upfront, it is much easier to maximize your space and make every surface feel intentional and usable.
